Harvest Monday

The garden is quiet, but I've kept some beets and carrots in for the winter. These carrots were planted on June 14, took over a month to germinate, and they still haven't grown very big as you can see. I thought I'd pull some up today to check on progress.

I'm going to post a tally for 2010 as a separate blog entry now...

Hey! How did you get my carrots? They are a frustrating vegetable to grow. Mine either don't come up, or grow to an inch tall and then just go away. The ones I have that look like your's I grew in a 16 inch wide container. The tops were great looking, but the roots were like yours. I just don't understand it.

Well they are cute. I bet their tasty. I find that carrots grow best if given light soil and adequate water especially at germination time. Some people use a germination board for later crops started in the heat. My problem is not getting them to size up but getting them to taste sweet. My soil was more or less nuetral (we've moved) so I don't think that was the problem? Some varieties were sweeter than others and maybe it is down to that. Don't know??
